Broadsheet: Sudds & Thompson chains
The original chains were used in 1826 in the punishment of two Privates of the 57th Regiment, Joseph Sudds and Patrick Thompson. Considering the convict life preferable to the army in NSW, they committed petty theft in a hope of being discharged from the military. In order to curb this form of desertion Governor Darling made an example of the pair by sentencing them to seven years road labor in chains.
Not long into his punishment, Sudds died, having already been seriously ill before he was put in chains. Governor Darling's treatment of Sudds and Thompson was widely condemned as barbaric and unnecessary. A replica set of Sudds and Thompson chains hangs in the Australian History Museum (AHM006156).
