About Us

'The White Hart Inn: Creating Connections Across Time And Distance' is an online exhibition, curated by Anna Hohne and Isabella Balic for the Australian History Museum at Macquarie University as part of National Archaeology Week (19th-25th May 2019). The principal purpose of this online exhibition is to show the interrelation between cultural heritage and archaeology in Australia, by examining the establishment, operation, decline, and rediscovery of the White Hart Inn. One of the major themes of the exhibition is connection; the way that inns were vital to supporting communities and travellers as the colony expanded, how it has been rediscovered as a result of the Sydney Metro project which seeks to connect disparate areas of Sydney in the present, and how the objects can connect us with the lives of individuals who lived in the same area over a hundred years ago. The online exhibition incorporates photographs, photographic scans, 3D scanned objects, and interviews to tell a story spanning three centuries.

All of the objects from the White Hart Inn site were donated to the Macquarie University Australian History Museum by Sydney Metro in 2018. The AHM initially began as a Document Research Centre, however, over time it has evolved into a more object-based collection, with a focus on five key themes spanning the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries: Indigenous Australia, immigration, war & society, women's studies, and social history (with a focus on domestic & working life). More information on the AHM and its collection can be found at http://austhistmuseum.mq.edu.au

The curators would like to thank Jane Thogerson (Australian History Museum), Pamela Kottaras (EMM Consulting Pty Ltd), and Matthew Marrinan (Sydney Metro) for their assistance and support of the project.
